Through responsibility to success
* DEG symposium on Corporate Social Responsibility
* External evaluation of 16 companies presented
Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) can also be a strategic competitive advantage especially in developing and emerging-market countries. This is the conclusion of an evaluation which DEG – Deutsche Investitions- und Entwicklungsgesellschaft mbH carried out in 16 of its project companies. DEG presented the results on 30 October 2008 during an international symposium entitled “Act responsibly – why CSR pays off”. The conference was attended by entrepreneurs from more than 20 countries and representatives from politics, development institutions and the German industry and trade.
“To us, development particularly implies that the companies we work with commit themselves to their responsibility to society and, within the scope of their possibilities, do more than legally required.” This is how Dr Winfried Polte, chairman of DEG’s Board of Management, explained the importance of the topic CSR for DEG. As one of Europe’s largest development finance institutions, DEG only promotes, finances and accompanies projects with a developmental effect and which are environmentally and socially compatible. The external study carried out this summer was the first to review whether the companies also fulfil the expectations in terms of CSR.
